The failure of the Palestinian Authority - Mouin Rabbani

In a most-watched episode of the Lex Freedman Podcast, Mouin Rabbani joined a panel discussion alongside former Mid-Atlantic guest Professor Benny Morris and Professor Norman Finkelstein to discuss the ongoing war in Gaza. With 3 million views and counting, the episode provided a marathon gladiatorial spectacle on the politics of Israeli-Palestinian relations in the face of Israel's onslaught in Gaza. Rabbani an ex UN envoy to Syria, is known for his nuanced take on Middle Eastern politics, brought a measured and assured presence to the conversation, contrasting with the often heated exchanges between frenemies Morris and Finkelstein.

It was his performance on the podcast that prompted me to email him and invite him onto the podcast. We looked at West Bank politics through the lens of the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas. Rabbani articulated a clear and comprehensive analysis of the historical and political dimensions of the Palestinian Authority. His approach not only demonstrated deep expertise but also a commitment to a balanced discussion, which resonated well with listeners seeking clarity on such a complex issue.

The conversation covered a range of topics, including the historical context of the Israeli occupation, the conflict between Hamas and the PA, and the political aspirations of the Palestinian people, as well as the international community's role in fostering peace or perpetuating the status quo. Rabbani emphasised the unpopularity and corruption of the PA after 18 years of ruling the West Bank.

12 listeners watched the recording of the interview on Zoom, and they appreciated Rabbani's ability to dissect the narratives propagated by various sides of the conflict. His insights into the political strategies of both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority provided a deeper understanding of the current challenges and potential pathways forward.

My lasting impression was the dichotomy of widespread Palestinian support throughout the world just as the PA is imploding in the West Bank, neither having the political power to criticise Israel nor the moral will to stand up for the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.
