A national referendum is scheduled to be held in Scotland on 18 September 2014, in which residents of Scotland can vote for or against leaving the UK. Following the Scottish National Party's victory in the 2011 election, which gave the party an overall majority in the Scottish Parliament, First Minister Alex Salmond stated his desire to hold a referendum “in the second half of the parliament”, a campaign for Scottish independence was launched on 25 May 2012 by the SNP.
